The Breakdown

Deep Water Slow Pitch Jigs 150g & 250g | COLMANTS CastMan®

The COLMANTS difference hits slow-pitch jigging. Our engineers took what they learned from CastMan ARMOR’s Epoxy Vault and applied it to CastMan Deep Water. Deep Water is built for one job: the long, slow fall over deep structure. Two sizes — 150g at 5½ inches and 250g at 6½ inches — for amberjack, grouper, snapper and tuna from about 75 feet down to 300.

Epoxy Vault on Every Deep Water Jig
Transparent 1.2mm Epoxy Vault Armor: Most jigs get a clear coat. These get a measured 1.2mm epoxy shell poured over the holographic foil and the recessed 3D eyes, then cured hard — about the thickness of a credit card and a half. Teeth, reef structure and hook rash stop at the shell. The foil underneath keeps its depth and its flash through a full season in the jig bag, and the eyes cannot peel, snag a hook point or get knocked out the way a stick-on eye can.

The Shimmer Drop. The vault doesn’t stop the fantastic action. Give it slack and the jig levels out flat and horizontal, then flutters down in a tight, high-frequency shimmer. The body is center-balanced, so it holds that attitude in current instead of rolling over and nose-diving. Most deep bites come on the fall, and a jig that stays flat stays in the strike zone longer — throwing flash sideways the entire way down.

UV-reactive on every color. Not an accent on select patterns. Every colorway in the line fluoresces under the blue-violet light that still reaches depth, which is exactly where ordinary color disappears first. Glow sits on top of that on select patterns, for the deepest water and the low-light bite.

Through-wired, nose to tail. One wire runs the full length of the jig and closes into the loop at the head, so the line tie is not an eye set into the body. There is nothing anchored in the casting that can straighten or pull free when a big amberjack loads the rod — the load runs through the wire and the body simply rides on it. It is the part of a jig nobody sees and everybody finds out about at the worst possible moment.

Rigged and ready. As is the COLMANTS way, hardware is just as premium. The nose stack runs that wire loop to split ring to welded solid ring, with BKK twin assist hooks matched to each weight — 4/0 at 150g, 5/0 at 250g. The split ring is rated 200 to 300 lb, and because the assists are bound to the solid ring, the cords never ride in the split ring’s gap. Each assist cord is bound to its hook with ultra-high-tensile thread under a marine-grade epoxy seal, protecting the connection from fraying. Most slow pitch jigs ship bare: the assist hooks, the solid ring and the split ring are all bought separately, and you build the nose stack yourself before the jig ever gets wet. Deep Water arrives finished. Tie it on and fish it straight out of the sleeve. Nothing to buy, nothing to re-rig.

Where to tie it. Connect at the nose, never the tail — a slow pitch jig is built to hang and fall head-up. Clipping a snap to the split ring is the fastest way to work, and your leader never touches the split; the trade is a little extra hardware at the nose, so if you want the cleanest fall of all, tie direct instead. The best knot goes straight to the solid ring: smooth, welded and gapless, it is the best knot surface on the jig, and your leader simply shares the ring with the assist cords. A knot on the welded nose loop is stronger still, since it takes the split ring out of the load path, though it is fiddly to thread and you give up quick jig changes. A barrel swivel on the split ring with your leader on the far eye also works and takes line twist out of long falls — rate the swivel at or above your leader, since it carries the whole load. The one thing to avoid is knotting the leader onto the split ring itself, where the gap will chafe fluorocarbon and mono under load.

Where to tie your leader on a CastMan Deep Water slow pitch jig: the through-wire nose loop, the split ring your snap clips to, and the welded solid ring that carries the twin assists How to fish it. Lift, pause, let it go. One slow lift of the rod with a quarter to half turn of the handle sends the jig up and sideways; drop the tip and the pause does the work. No aggressive cadence, no brick-pulling, and no fatigue over a long day on the rail. Watch your line on every fall — that is where the bite comes.

Sizing it to the water. The working rule in slow pitch is about one gram of jig per foot of water, then more as the current builds — roughly a quarter again in moderate current, half again when it is really running. The 150g covers most Panhandle days from 75 to 200 feet; the 250g takes over past that, or shallower when the drift is up. The test is simple: the jig has to stay vertical. If your line starts scoping away at an angle, you are too light, not too deep.

Field-tested. Deep Water came back intact from late Spring charter seasons at Race Point, Provincetown and September Snapper season in the Gulf. Dozens of striped bass to 48 inches in 75 to 175 feet of water, with the finish and the terminal hardware holding through the whole run in Provincetown, big ugly Snapper and Grouper in the Gulf.

Ten colorways, covering every depth band from the reds and oranges that work shallow to the blues, purples and glows that carry to the bottom.
